The Chemical Safety program has been developed and maintained to control hazards related to chemicals used within the Medical Center community. Program requirements include annual and quarterly inspections of all research and support areas, maintaining accurate and current chemical inventories, laboratory staff training, assessment of exposures related to chemical hazards, assisting investigators in the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals. All program elements are implemented to comply with several OSHA standards, including, but not limited to Hazard Communication, Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories, Formaldehyde Exposure Control, and Respiratory Protection.
The Chemical Safety Review Committee (CSRC) is responsible for reviewing research activities conducted by Principal Investigators that involve the use of particularly hazardous chemicals at GUMC. These include chemicals classifed as carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic, acutely highly toxic, or chemicals of unknown toxicity. Please select the link above for more information.
