Other Medical Surveillance

Georgetown University maintains exposure-specific medical surveillance programs for personnel whose assigned duties or workplace exposures meet applicable program criteria. Enrollment is determined based on hazard assessment, exposure level, job duties, and regulatory or University requirements.

Hearing Conservation

Georgetown University’s Hearing Conservation Program is intended to prevent occupational hearing loss among employees exposed to hazardous workplace noise.

EH&S evaluates workplace noise, identifies affected employees, administers the program, coordinates required training, and supports selection and use of hearing protection. Occupational Health provides or coordinates audiometric testing, evaluates audiograms, communicates applicable findings, and maintains confidential audiometric records.

Employees enrolled in the program may be required to complete:

  • Baseline audiometric testing
  • Annual audiometric testing
  • Additional retesting or follow-up when a possible standard threshold shift is identified
  • Annual hearing conservation training
  • Use of required hearing protection

Employees should report potential noise hazards or problems with hearing protection to their supervisor and EH&S. Employees enrolled in the program are responsible for scheduling and completing audiometric testing as instructed.

Formaldehyde Medical Surveillance

Medical surveillance may be required for employees exposed to formaldehyde at or above applicable exposure levels, employees who develop signs or symptoms associated with formaldehyde exposure, or employees involved in an emergency exposure.

Occupational Health reviews the applicable medical questionnaire and determines whether further medical evaluation, testing, or follow-up is needed.
