Disinfection
Effective disinfection is essential to prevent the spread of infectious agents in laboratory settings. Selection and use of disinfectants must be based on the biological material in use, appropriate concentration, and required contact time. Refer to the Biological Safety Manual for requirements and approved procedures.
Bleach (Sodium hypochlorite) is one of the most commonly used and broadly effective laboratory disinfectants when properly diluted and allowed adequate contact time. It provides broad-spectrum activity against many bacteria and viruses and is inexpensive and readily available. Bleach can be corrosive to certain surfaces, is less effective in the presence of organic material, and degrades over time. Because bleach loses potency: always check manufacturer expiration dates, prepare fresh working solutions daily, and label secondary containers with preparation and expiration dates. Detailed dilution guidance and required contact times are available in the Bleach Use Guide.
