Research Involving Recombinant DNA, Synthetic Nucleic Acids and Viral Vectors
Research involving recombinant DNA (rDNA), synthetic nucleic acids, and viral vectors is subject to institutional oversight under the NIH Guidelines.
Recombinant DNA and synthetic nucleic acids include molecules that are constructed or modified outside of living cells and can replicate in a host organism, as well as chemically synthesized or amplified nucleic acids that may pose biosafety risks. Viral vectors are engineered viruses used to deliver genetic material into cells for research, therapeutic modeling, or gene expression studies.
Because these materials can alter gene expression, introduce new traits, or affect host range and pathogenicity, their use requires review to ensure appropriate containment, risk assessment, and compliance with federal requirements.
All research involving recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids, viral vectors (including AAV, lentiviral, retroviral, adenoviral, and similar systems), and genetically modified organisms must be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) prior to initiation.
