Laboratory Security

Laboratory security at Georgetown University is a shared responsibility and is essential for protecting personnel, research materials, equipment, and sensitive information. All laboratories must be secured at all times when unoccupied. Access is restricted to authorized personnel only, and Principal Investigators are responsible for determining who is granted access based on training, authorization, and the hazards present in the laboratory.

Laboratories must implement appropriate access controls, including keycard or keyed entry, and ensure that doors are never propped open. Areas containing high-risk materials, including hazardous chemicals, biological agents, select agents, radioactive materials, or sensitive equipment, require additional security measures as outlined in the laboratory’s approved security plan. Laboratory personnel are responsible for securing hazardous materials, locking storage cabinets, and ensuring that all controlled materials are stored in accordance with University policies.

Any suspected or actual security breach must be reported immediately to the Principal Investigator and the Office of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S). Consistent application of laboratory security measures prevents theft, misuse, and accidents, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.
