Laboratory Relocation and Decommissioning
Laboratory relocation and decommissioning at Georgetown University must be planned and completed in accordance with University policy to ensure that hazardous materials are properly managed and that spaces are left in a safe condition for future use. Whether a laboratory is relocating to a new space or permanently closing, all hazardous materials, including chemicals, biological materials, radioactive materials, sharps, and regulated equipment, must be identified, properly disposed of, transferred, or secured prior to vacating the space.
Principal Investigators are responsible for coordinating laboratory relocation or decommissioning activities and must notify the Office of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) in advance. EH&S will provide guidance, conduct required assessments, and verify that the space meets University decommissioning requirements. Benches, fume hoods, biological safety cabinets, storage areas, and equipment must be cleared, cleaned, and decontaminated as applicable. No laboratory space may be released to Facilities, reassigned, or renovated until EH&S confirms that decommissioning requirements have been met.
Failure to follow University procedures may delay moves, result in additional costs charged to the department, and pose health and safety risks to occupants and facilities staff.
