Laboratory Incidents

All laboratory incidents, including accidents, spills, exposures, near misses, and equipment malfunctions, must be reported immediately at Georgetown University. Prompt reporting ensures that appropriate medical care is provided, hazards are controlled, and corrective actions are implemented to prevent recurrence.

Principal Investigators and supervisors are responsible for ensuring that all laboratory personnel are aware of reporting procedures and know how to respond to emergencies. Laboratory personnel must stop work immediately if an incident occurs and follow established emergency procedures, including notifying the Principal Investigator, EH&S, and other relevant University authorities.

Laboratory incident reports must include a description of what happened, the materials involved, any injuries or exposures, and corrective actions taken. EH&S reviews all reports, investigates as necessary, and provides guidance on remediation and prevention. Failure to report incidents may result in disciplinary action and compromises the safety of personnel and the laboratory environment.

Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC)

The purpose of the SPCC program is to ensure compliance with USEPA regulations and minimize the potential risks of oil spill. It includes spill prevention procedures, inventory of oil and oil containing devices, and the training and responsibilities of employees.
