Laboratory Design
Proper laboratory design is essential to protect personnel, safeguard research, and ensure compliance with University and regulatory standards. At Georgetown University, laboratories must be designed to minimize exposure to chemical, biological, and physical hazards while providing a functional and efficient workspace for research activities.
Key design considerations include:
- Ventilation: Laboratories must be equipped with proper general and local exhaust ventilation, including functioning chemical fume hoods and biological safety cabinets, to control airborne hazards.
- Space Layout: Work areas should allow safe movement, access to emergency equipment, and separation of incompatible materials. Storage for chemicals, biological materials, and sharps must be clearly designated and secured.
- Utilities and Equipment: Adequate lighting, plumbing, electrical systems, and emergency equipment such as eyewash stations and safety showers must be integrated into the laboratory layout. Equipment should be installed according to manufacturer specifications and maintained in good working order.
- Safety and Compliance: Laboratory design must facilitate compliance with EH&S policies, fire codes, and OSHA regulations. Emergency exits, signage, and alarm systems must be clearly visible and accessible.
