Safe Use of Autoclaves
The autoclave is an essential tool in laboratory and clinical settings for the sterilization of equipment, effectively eliminating microorganisms that may be present on surfaces. Autoclaves achieve sterilization through a combination of high temperature and pressure, which generates steam within the chamber. The steam reaches temperatures of 121°C (250°F), effectively killing microbial contaminants. This method of sterilization is commonly used to sterilize various items such as glassware, media, instruments, and other laboratory equipment. It ensures that these items are safe to use in experimental procedures and clinical applications, minimizing the risk of contamination.

Before using an autoclave, all laboratory members must:
- Receive a passing score on Initial Laboratory Safety Training
- Receive lab-specific training from supervisor
- Review the autoclave user manual
- Complete several cycles under supervision until procedure is understood
If a malfunction occurs with equipment or facilities, immediately contact the building operations manager. In the event of an alarm, silence the alarm and immediately contact building operations to report the incident and ensure appropriate action is taken.
