Standard Operating Procedures

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are written instructions, required by OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.1450, “Occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals in laboratories”, that document work practices and processes that must be followed when using hazardous chemicals. SOP documentation is required for work involving:

SOPs must be reviewed by EH&S, and in certain circumstances, may necessitate consultation with subject matter experts. When requested, EH&S will provide assistance in the development of the written SOP.

Current SOPs must be readily accessible for reference in the workplace to all laboratory/facility personnel using the material.

Standard Operating Procedure for PHS

All PHS used inside the laboratory can be written down on the above form using the table on page 6. Separate forms are not needed for multiple PHS. If any issues are encountered while completing the form, reach out to gu-ehs@georgetown.edu.

Submission

When a new PHS is added to the lab or when one is removed, update the form and send it via email to gu-ehs@georgetown.edu. Keep the most up-to-date version inside the laboratory’s safety binder for ease of access.
